The benefits of yoga are large enough to fill book after book twenty times over, but in grand summary we're talking about the physical space, the mental space, and the spiritual space. Yes, I said spiritual, but yoga is not a religion, nor does it preach or pray to or about any deity.  Instead, yoga helps us understand our place in this universe; how we're connected; what moves and motivates us; if we're following an honorable path.  This comes both from the time and introspection that unfolds on the mat when life is left outside the room, and by guiding and motivational words on behalf of the instructor (me!).

Mentally, we are overloaded as humans of the 21st century.  We play so many roles and often mental clarity and peace are given little time to open.  In class, I remind students that all they really have to remember to do during the hour is breathe.  That's it.  What a load taken off one's shoulders! Breathing and following the breath in each passing moment can do a lot for repairing frazzled brains, and when we're thinking clearer, we're more productive, compassionate and patient off the mat.

The physical benefits of yoga are what draws most people to the practice.  Aside from the obvious strength, balance, and flexibility gains, the more powerful effects extend into all seven systems of the body.  Blood pressure, immunity from viruses, digestion and bowl regulation, thyroid/endocrine system, sex drive and reproductive health, joint stability, weight-loss, and central nervous system communication ALL improve just to name a few examples!
